:

There are currently several different clinical treatments for infertility. The course of treatment recommended for you and your partner will depend on the nature of your fertility problem. When seeking fertility advice you should discuss all aspects of you and/or your partners infertility with your consultant. If you are not sure why you have been reccommended for a specific treatment then make sure that you ask the questions. You do not have to “just accept it” just becuase this feels like your only hope to have a child.

Research suggests that, couples who are better informed about their treatment and the nature of their infertility, have a slightly increased chance of a successful pregnancy.

Your infertility may be explained or unexplained, meaning that you or your partner have either been given a clinical reason as to why you cannot concieve naturally, or it may be suggested that there is no clinical abnormality present, which is termed unexplained. The most popular treatments in the UK are OI, IUI, IVF and ICSI.

In some cases, particularly unexplained infertility or problems relating to ovulation, a couple may begin with the least invasive treatments such as OI or IUI. If these are unsuccessful then they may move on to IVF or ICSI.

In cases where there appears to be a more severe problem relating to infertility such as, blocked fallopian tubes or scarring due to endometriosis, then IVF may be considered first,

With male factor infertility or a problem with both partners, then the first option is usually ICSI.
