Fertility Problems
Approximately one in six couples experience fertility problems while trying to conceive and there are a number of factors, both male and female, that can affect your fertility. In nearly 30% of cases the cause is attributed to the female, 30% male, 30% both and 10% unexplained. Unexplained infertility is probably one of the most difficult to come to terms with, as the not knowing exactly what causes the problems may become exacerbating. In addition to this, there will always be hope that any problem may rectify itself, which may often be the case in what is known as the ‘miracle baby’.
Our case studies details some couples’ experience of this.
In general, women as opposed to men tend to have more of an idea that they may experience reproductive problems for no other reason than they are usually aware of some kind of menstrual related problem, if it exists, although this is not always the case as menstrual problems can often be masked by contraceptive medication or late onset of disease. The most common causes relating to female fertility problems are Endometriosis, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and Premature Ovarian Menopause. There are several methods of assisted conception now available to overcome these problems, namely, IVF, GIFT etc….
Reproductive problems in men are usually reflected or associated with the overall sperm quality; low sperm count, poor motility and or damaged sperm may be some examples. Due to advances in reproductive medicine, male fertility can be assisted using Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
